Tonic
A tonic for your problems?
Tonic is a short visual novel puzzle made in RenPy. We hope you enjoy!
Note about gameplay and accessibility:
The background visual and music are crucial to uncovering the true ending of this game. The SFX act as an additional hint, but are not 100% necessary. For accessibility, if you are unable to listen, we have provided a screenshot of the first page of our score. If you are unable to see the background visual, we have provided a detailed description of the image below.
Created for the O2A2 game jam, Tonic includes the following:
- Under one thousand words of storyline (not counting short repeated segments, it was like 996 or something?)
- One title background
- One game background
- One menu background
- One sprite
- One sound effect
- One original music track
- Five endings

Description of background image:
There is a wide shot of a small, shabby theatre, digitally drawn. It is slightly dark and overshadowed, as though not properly lit up. The ceiling, floor, and walls are all a shade of blue. From right to left, there is a stage with a square hole in the middle that leads to darkness, a draping red curtain that covers just about the entire backstage, save a small sliver of darkness in the farthest corner, and on the folds of the curtain spell out the letters "L" and "A". In the middle, there are rows of seats — the fold-up kind — and on the back wall are two white, marble (?) pillars. To the right, there is a second floor shown by a gray, concrete (?) box above the lower ceiling. Nothing above is visible. On the closest end of the left side are 3 doors, with an overhead sign saying "WC" in green. On the farthest end is a water fountain, with streaks of rust, and a tattered poster hanging above it. An overhead sign notes "EXIT" and includes an arrow point outward, in a direction that is not drawn on this background.

Woah how cool!! Sadly my musical knowledge is next to zero, but I found the puzzles so fascinating and the hints cryptic while still making sense. I love the way the background is used
Awww thank you so much! Yeah I was worried that it would be too hard for people who don’t have music backgrounds, but essentially the key is that once you know the password, you just have to go through the whole game in the order in which the password suggests... hope that isn’t too cryptic either lol, but thank you so much for playing!!
This is an incredible use of the asset limitation! I'm so impressed by the depth of the puzzles. A really inventive visual novel, I have never played anything like this before. Great job team :)
Aww thank you!!! :) Always fun to hear your insights when you play!!
